It's much older than VMS.  As per https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Status_key,
it looks like it started with BBN LISP on the SDS 940.  I'm not sure if
the Ctrl-T feature was in the 940 timesharing system, but in any case it
was copied to TENEX.  I will have to look into whether TOPS-10 got it
before or after TENEX; so far it looks like after.
