I agree completely.  Most projects have their infrastructure
well established, it is better to build on that rather than
diverge.  This is what I dislike most about the HP ports of
open source.  The Adacore people put their stuff back into
the source tree (although it took a while), that's why there
is now a gas for OpenVMS I64 and Alpha (again).
