Hardly a complete (useful) description of the transfer or
the post-transfer processing.

Most likely explanation: It's not "the very same file".

Useful info in such a problem report might include some
idea of the Kermit version(s), and the actual procedure used.
A modern (cough) C-Kermit announces its version, first thing:

alp $ kermit
C-Kermit 8.0.212 Dev.26, 20 Dec 2006, for OpenVMS Alpha
 Copyright (C) 1985, 2006,
Trustees of Columbia University in the City of New York.
Type ? or HELP for help.
ALP$DKA0:[SMS] C-Kermit>

Not knowing what yours is, I don't know what it does.

   According to:

http://www.columbia.edu/kermit/ckututor.html#transfer

[...]
And plus, C-Kermit and K95 also switch automatically between
text and binary mode for each file, so there is no need to
"set file type binary" or "set file type text", or to worry
about files being corrupted because they were transferred in
the wrong mode.
[...]

Because you're running VMS V6.2, I assume that you're not
using the latest C-Kermit, so perhaps you _did_ need to "set
file type binary" and/or worry about files being corrupted
because they were transferred in the wrong mode.

   Tape (paper, magnetic), floppy disks?
