One of my first summer jobs was at reader's digest.
They had developped a neat way to print double sided on such printers.
The form was mounted on the left side of the carriage. Spewed out the
back where it was carefully reversed and fed back up the printer on the
right right of the carriage. They'd count the number of pages in the
paper loop and feed that to the jcl for the job.
The application program built a buffer of that many pages so it would
keep the backside output for customer number 1 in memory and print it to
the right as it was printing customer #17's front on the left.
Their queue manager also allowed them to step a queue line by line.
(very useful for aligning forms before setting the print job on the loose.)
