You may be speaking the truth. Last month (September-2009) my boss
wanted me to get some quotes for building an OpenVMS cluster
(partially for DRP purposes). We currently run a single AS-DS20e and
my boss wanted me to get licenses for a second AS-DS20e (we already
have the hardware) "and" cluster software for two nodes. The quote
came in at $50k which caused my boss to flip. Needless to say, our DRP
solution now involves a cold stand-by system in another city.
NSR
p.s. this next statement is totally subjective: according to my boss,
the bean-counters expected the quote to come in around $10k but some
arm-twisting might have gotten them to accept $15k. So from our bean
counter's perspective, HP prices where 3-5 times too high. I'm not
sure what competing products they were comparing it to (if anything)
but they always bring up the blanket s/w contract we already have with
Microsoft.
