I'm neither angry nor bitter and have already been proven correct, at
least in HPs eyes. Hopefully they will post their response publicly
here once their lawyers have time to vet it.
I will not stop you from believing what you wish, but I can tell you
that only a token few in the Linmodems list are willing to aid an
attempted criminal act. The rest of the list realizes that a bait &
switch is illegal in a lot of countries and at the very least, an
attempt to hold hostage or extort a volunteer effort in an attempt to
get back on a company payroll is highly unethical.
Has there been stuff provided in the past, yes? Does that excuse the
criminal activity and the racial slur? No.
Will there be some in the world who mistakenly think a volunteer can
directly extort funds if they have provided even one thing free to a
community? Yes. They would be incorrect, but that doesn't mean they
won't believe it. Would you find one or two such people on the
Linmodems list? Definitely. They don't care if multiple crimes have
been committed as long as something at some point was offered up for
free and there is the faint hope that once the extortion is complete
that same fix might be offered up to others. In my and many other
countries that belief and activities to support such a belief
classifies the individual as an Accessory to the crime or crimes.
Once again, when you are registered as a package maintainer, you only
have a limited number of responses when a "does not compile" bug has
been verified:
a) [ ] I will get to it when I can.
b) [ ] I can't get to it for a long time - why don't you take a stab
at it?
c) [ ] If either a) or b) don't work for you, consider finding
somebody else
who can help you with this problem.
d) [] if you really want me to drop everything and fix your problem
now, you have to contact this other paid service, otherwise expect it
to be fixed via option a).
HP now has a very serious blemish to deal with. They do need to
_publicly_ resolve the issue. They also need to figure out a way of
stopping this from happening again, not just with Philipe, but with
any other package maintainer they have cut loose from the payroll.
