   And I thought that I had increased Pgflquo, too, but
apparently not.  It was 40960.  204800 seems to help
considerably.  Those (identical) "Peak virtual size: 208880"
values were clues.  A typical old log file said "Peak virtual
size: 190448".  A typical working (new one) says "Peak virtual
size: 314000".  Sigh.  Never mind.

   And I may have been smart at one time, too.

   One could argue that the TCPIP installation procedure
should check things like this.  Perhaps I'll submit a
complaint to one of the black-hole feedback Web forms.
