I was not aware that the freeware CD was officially dead.

But it does not change that I am still a bit skeptical about
whether the current status is optimal.

Single content does not mean single source. Other software distributions
are perfectly capable of providing the same stuff from dozens of HTTP
and FTP servers, torrents etc..
