I think there's no point in creating "own" versions of make and tar etc.
Both are available on unixoid systems for ages, most come standard
with the base installation. They always worked fine for me and
I can't see why they shouldn't work for stuff like cdrtools.
The "s"-tools are pretty much a one man show, I never encountered/needed
them outside the small world of cdrtools. Likewise, the Gnu versions
might add some new functionality, but one can live without them,
except, of course, the maintainer forces you to use them for the
build procedure.
(the "G" crowd is much larger than the "s" crowd, btw)
