As mentioned already several times, smake and star are the oldest free
implementations of the related program interfaces. Star is much more powerful
than GNU tar and smake is more portable than GNU make. If you only like
one free implementaion, you may try to convince Richard Stallman to give up
the GNU reimplementations.
