Note that ALL-IN-1 had a client-server approach to this. A server was
part of All-IN-1 on the VMS host would receive ocnnections from clients
on PCs/Macs etc (via Teamlinks and later via Outlook with MAPI) and
would notify those clients when ALL-IN-1 deposited new messages in their
inbox.

Of course all that was abandonned.

Also note that modern IMAP servers have "push" capabilities which will
notify a connected client of a new message. (think Blackberry). VMS
doesn't have that feature with TCPIP Services 5.6
