This is not a stupid idea at all.
First off, I have never seen any kind of PC run properly when MS
Outlook (not express) was running. It saps the system of all resources
so that almost nothing else will run. Secondly, if McAfee starts while
Outlook is running then doing a 3-finger salute to pull up the task
manager will take 30 seconds. Some people have doublef the amount of
installed memory but nothing seems to help. My employer requires
everyone to use these badly written programs but some employees have
quietly replaced MS Outlook with something else just so they can make
it though the day. (removing McAfee could lead to dismissal)
All my complaints are vindicated when a contractor comes on site with
a Linux laptop. At first it seems a little odd to watch someone
connect a laptop to the public internet with no anti-virus or anti-
spam software until you realize that it is the windows user who has
the wrong point of view.
I do not need a laptop so have been SERIOUSLY considering one of the
many rx2600 Itanium boxes on eBay this month.
p.s. It would be a whole lot better for all concerned if OpenVMS ran
on x86-64
