I checked the listings and apparently the error is a result of
having the DEV$V_RTT bit set. It could well break plenty of
other things, but if you had the privs to clear this bit in
the UCB you might get a bit further.

It might be to do with the way characters are processed by
when DEV$V_RTT is set. I'm not too sure.
