Since you've got the metal base you could still operate it standing up
without the side panels. I've got a couple of rx2620s and one of them
doesn't have the side panels on it.
As for the noise, that describes one of the rx2620s I have (the other
rx2620 is much quieter even though it doesn't have the Office Friendly
option). My two rx2600s aren't too loud (which is why I usually used
them before I got the quiet rx2620), but this is subjective.
Are there two power supplies in the rx2600? Are both plugged in? I've
not tried two power supplies in my rx2600 but I've worked with other
systems with redundant power supplies that will run the fans full speed
if one of them is unplugged.
