Thank you, Uli, that workaround worked for me, too! So far I have tried 
it on my Ubuntu box. As soon as I figure out how to do xmodmap in Xming 
I will fix the Windows box, too.

I have the Czech keyboard layout installed on both boxen, which must 
cause a similar situation to the German/Austrian keymap problem 
described in the document you cited.

Now I see why none of the British and U.S. folks could reproduce the bug.
