This has not been my experience at all. Perhaps you have been buying
cheap motherboards and/or power supplies?

1. We did eventually lose 3 out of 20 Athlon MP compute nodes,
but the failures didn't start until year 5, and those machines
     ran 24x7.
2. All 8 Athlon XP workstations were working after 4 years.
3. All 8 of the socket 940 workstations were working after 4 years.
4. All 8 of the Athlon II workstations are working after 2 years.
5. A dual Opteron file server is still running at 4.5 years.
6. A different dual Opteron file server is still running at 2 years.
It is "reincarnated" - before we got it it ran for who knows
how many years in a Yahoo data center.
7. A dual Athlon MP file server ran for 5 years.

So, of 47 machines with AMD CPUs there were no failures in the first 5
years, and only 3 failures ever.
