My previous statement requires a little explanation.
According to what I read over at wikipedia a couple of days ago, the original purpose of favicon.ico was to place a little graphic in front of your url on a bookmark menu. It was also placed before the URL in the address bar "if the page was bookmarked".
While inspecting my Apache logs for a different problem, I noticed a huge number of references to favicon.ico (many more than this time last year when our client's were only allowed to use IE6; they now use IE8).
But we have noticed that tabbed browsers expect favicon.ico to be available (probably in the browser's cache) so it can be used "to precede the web page title" on each tab.

have cut the size of my log files by roughly 50% per day which I am assuming is consuming fewer system and network resources.
