That is because Unix has evolved quite a bit during this time. Apple
ported its HFS file system to Unix, there is zfs and more traditional
file systems as well. And you can mount FST FAT32 NTFS etc as well.
And while Unix is still based on X11, they updated Motif/CDE (which VKS
didn't upgrade), and of course, now we have the Linux GUIs from various
vendors that make use of GTK and possibly other stacks instead of Motif.
And then there is Apple which has its own proprietary GUI.
BTW, anyone know whether Android phones use X11 ? Or do they also have a
proprietary GUI developped by Google with totally different calls ?
