All this can be solved by bringing Hoff to some good bar, getting him to
drink enough of that magic elixir sold at bars that he will agree to
port VMS to 64 bit 8086 next weekend between laundry and shoveling snow,
and provide the detailed analysis of the port (something I am pretty
sure he has already done).

Caveat: if doing so jeoperdizes his HP severance/retirement package, you
better be ready to pony up the money to replace it.


Without access to the real engineers who did the port to IA64, any
porting endeavour to x86 cannot be realistic. These guys know about EFI,
they know about the issues with a different architecture etc.
