You are most likely correct, but, the whole thing still stinks of 
overmilk the cash cow until it's dead, then grind it up and sell the 
ground meat.  Probably including hoofs.

gouges the developers, or do I want to develop for an open and mostly 
free environment?  Tough choice ..."

The developer makes the same money regardless of OS, and possibly more 
on something more popular.  With the free OS, the developer can point to 
the lack of a vendor, and make even more "helping" the customer with OS 
issues.
