The same problem showed up on the AlphaServer 1200 and Digital Server 5305 systems. The work around presented then was to store a small script in nvram:
      >>> edit nvram
      *10 deposit -b toy:9 0D
      ^Z
I've tried the same with my XP1000, the trick unfortunately didn't work.
