This commetn made me wonder about just where things really stood.

I guess it is summed up here pretty good.

"DEC replaced most of their smaller machines with the PDP-11 in 1970,
      eventually selling over 600,000 units"

"The VAX was a best-seller, with over 400,000 sold"

So, their "best-seller" actually sold only 66% as many as its predecessor.
Maybe the ending of the PDP-11 line was the actual start of the denmise
of DEC. :-)

I wonder which has more systems, both production and hobbyist, PDP-11's
(which had three OSes to choose from) or the VMS Systems (which has 3
hardware platforms.)

Too bad there is no way to accurately determine this.
