The Vax systems had plenty of OS choices too.  You could purchase officially
supported from DEC your choice of VMS, VaxELN, or Ultrix-32.  There were some
third-party systems too, like the UCSD P-System, S-1, and I think Pick.
So there are plenty of choices any way you go.
