There are other desktop environments that supports up to date
web browsers. It really doesn't matter, let the user use whatever
desktop environment they want.

There is no "non-VMS software" to write. The support is already
built-in in any modern browser. Yes, some browser JS maybe, but
that is expected from any modern web application. And it is
plattform independant.

Go web-based and you will support all popular desktops...
