Hallo Volker,

yup. Or if the NFS server is started and tries to kind of register with
the portmapper.

That's what I did in the first place (plus added the nexcessary
privileges to the UCX$PORTM user) to find out where the portmapper gets
its configuration from.

It only opened UCX$SERVICE.DAT. That's why we restored UCX$SERVICE.DAT
(and, just to be sure, UCX$CONFIGURATION.DAT) from a recent backup.

Yes, it gets created, so I could find out about UCX$SERVICE.DAT and the
"record not found" message in its logfile. Interesting enough, this
message also shows up on an Alpha V8.4 system, but not on a V8.2
system... so it might be kind of expected, depending on exact
configuration of services etc.

The customer also booted from a six year old copy of the system disk
(left over from the migration to the emulator project) and did not see
the error there, *but* that copy used a different IP address (for
testing purposes, then).

[from your first posting:]

Last successful boot was about 6 months ago. So we tried to find out
what had changed since in a way that did not let the system boot again.
The customer remembered that there were changes to there network
structure which required that the network mask (but not the address) and
the default gateway needed to be changed. Apparently, this was only done
on the live system, but not made permanent using UCX SET CONFIG
INTERFACE and UCX SET ROUTE /PERMANENT commands.

After fixing these two details NFS and Portmapper successfully worked again.

Thanks for your ideas anyway.

Best regards,
Hans.
