I disagree. Applying different levels of trust to different people saying
something applies to everything in life.
People and organisations earn trust based on an established pattern
of behaviour and demonstrated knowledge.
An organisation such as the organisation behind LLVM is going to be
trusted more than a random person claiming something about copyright.
This matters so much that if a trusted organisation does something to
reduce that level of trust, you expect them to do things to restore
that trust in a clear way. If they can't, then your trust moves to
an alternative organisation instead.

As John has already pointed out, this is BSD code so this is perfectly
acceptable and is absolutely normal.
