Clutter?  Code should be clear.  A few characters more, some comment 
lines, etc are "clutter" but more than worth the trouble.

$ SEARCH X.X "now is the time

The above also works if I leave off the trailing ", perhaps for the same 
reason that leaving off the trailing ' sometimes works.  But I think 
that neither is good style.
