Once more I am indebted to the kind people on here: I have been out of it for some 30 years and was only aver a humble FE then! Yes, the 'MOP Remote Console Multicast' is exactly that, I have proven it by shutting down the alpha and only seeing that message when it is the only MOP provider on the subnet.

The log shows no accesses. Also moptrace shows packet activity when I try to download from the linux MOP server, but none when the alpha is the only srever on. I suspect that funny MAC address is the problem but I don't know why. I have tried mentally switching them big-endian/little-endian and bi, as well as bit shifting but cannot see any resemblance to the data I entered! If it doesn't have the address correct, I am sure it will not reply with an image!

thanks in advance for any more suggestions,
Nigel
