PDF printing has come a long way.  Many printers can print PDF files 
natively.

For example, I just printed a PDF file from VMS via a TCP/IP Services 
LPD queue--X86 system even--to an HP LaserJet Pro M148dw.  This printer 
has an IP address but is wireless and has PDF printing built in.  This 
is an under-$200 printer.
