I don't know about the official line, but most rack mount hardware is 
too heavy to be supported by the front panel screws alone. You need the 
longitudinal runners that go from front to back on each side to provide 
the main support under the unit. The front panel screws are there merely 
to hold the item in place.

The runners are a standard rack item and should be 'findable' at any 
dealer that deals in rack mount kit, new or s/h. The ones to look for 
are those with slots for mounting, which take account of differing rack 
depths...
